Moment of truth for Nokia

Nokia Earnings Preview Q2 2013

Nokia reports its spring quarter on Thursday ? and the stakes are very high, indeed. The?substantial spring?revenue weakness from?BlackBerry and HTC implies that many second-tier brands are now in serious trouble with their brand new product launches. Samsung?s earnings miss was a shocker because the South Korean giant was supposed to have a wide open shot at dominating spring sales, particularly?because Apple?s iPhone sales started slowing down significantly in the March quarter. The industry is now staring at the possibility of the entire high-end smartphone market slowing down much faster than expected.?But Nokia is not dependent on high-end smartphones to the extent that BlackBerry and HTC are ? and that makes Nokia?s spring report absolutely riveting.

[More from BGR: iPhone 5S: New leaked photos, purported full specs point to biggest ?S? upgrade ever]

Nokia has two black boxes in its June quarter performance: feature phone sales and the super cheap Lumia 520?smartphone sales. Estimating either?is fiendishly difficult.

[More from BGR: The Boy Genius Report: iPhone 5S to feature indestructible LiquidMetal case]

The company?s feature phone sales hinge on Africa, Middle East, Brazil and South-East Asia, and all leading brokerages have great trouble getting any sense of what is going on there. Wall Street underestimated Nokia?s low-end sales badly in Q2 2012 and Q3 2012, and then overestimated them grossly in Q1 2013. After Nokia?s feature phone shipments plunged to under 56?million units in the March quarter, it now has to deliver at least?54-55 million units to prevent a freak-out over how fast this business is eroding. This is a unique problem for Nokia; its major rivals have all pulled out of the feature phone market, fearful of its collapse.

Another mystery is the sales volume of the Lumia 520, which is the first true budget device in Nokia?s new Windows Phone 8 range. Its non-subsidized price dropped well under $200 during the June quarter, but there was a series of unusual sell-outs of this device in countries like India and America during April and May. Does Nokia have a big Windows Phone volume hit on its hands with the 520 ? and how does it impact the average sales price (ASP) of smartphones? If Nokia did?achieve a big Lumia 520 volume in the spring, its smartphone margin will probably give us strong clues about how profitably Nokia can sell such a cheap device.

Wall Street is all over the place. The revenue consensus ranges from?5.9 billion euros to 7 billion euros. The smartphone sales expectation is high; investors want volumes to vault from 6.1 million units in Q1 to 8 million units in Q2. But even here there is ambiguity about what would be??good? volume. If Nokia beats the smartphone volume consensus but delivers surprisingly low ASP and margins, that is going to be taken as an indication that the 520 is eroding the profitability of the division.

What Nokia really needs right now is a smartphone volume of 8.1 million or higher with sequential ASP decline from the March quarter that is 2.8% or lower. That is a delicate needle to thread.

Kabam Eyes $300M In Revenue This Year As It Lets Employees Cash Out

kabamWith the IPO door seemingly shut to gaming companies, some of the biggest privately-held studios in the world have been looking for new ways to reward longstanding employees. San Francisco’s Kabam becomes yet another one today in a deal that let employees sell $38.5 million of their shares at a $700 million valuation. Everyone in the company who had vested shares had the choice to sell, so it wasn’t limited to just the management. Kabam isn’t saying who is funding this offering, except to say that both current investors as well as a few new investors are participating. Kabam’s most recently disclosed valuation before this offering was roughly $500 million in a May 2011 deal that involved Google Ventures, Intel Capital, Redpoint Ventures and Canaan Partners. But since Kabam has successfully transitioned onto mobile platforms and away from Facebook with three of the top 25 grossing iPhone titles in the U.S., it’s been able to bump that valuation up a little bit. The company now says it may make about $300 million this year in revenues, up from $180 million last year. While the company says it’s profitable, it’s still not clear how profitable it is. Kabam said it has more than $50 million in cash in the bank today. But the company also said it had $45 million in cash in the bank back in January, so a roughly $5 to 10 million increase in cash on the balance sheet over six months is not that much. CEO Kevin Chou has publicly talked about the company’s IPO prospects in the past. But after Zynga’s disastrous debut with a 75 percent decline in its first year, very few gaming companies seem willing to test the IPO waters. Even though The Wall Street Journal reported last month that King, the maker of Candy Crush Saga, had hired bankers to explore an IPO, sources close to the company have told me King has backed off this prospect for the time being. What that means is you have a host of companies that are throwing off cash that are tied in their ability to provide returns to early shareholders or reward employees. In this case, a secondary offering might make sense. Finland’s Supercell gave all of its employees the option to sell 16.7 percent of their stakes when they raised $130 million at a $770 million valuation earlier this year.

India to restore Bhutan fuel subsidy soon

NEW DELHI: The stunning victory of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in Bhutan's second democratic elections has raised hopes of an early settlement to the situation arising out of India's withdrawal of subsidy on its supply of LPG and kerosene.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has written to PDP chief Tshering Tobgay to convey that he has already asked his officials to prepare for discussions over India's Plan assistance to Bhutan. Singh has assured him of India's "unflinching and steadfast" support and that New Delhi is and will always be mindful of Bhutan's interests and that India is a privileged partner of Bhutan in its socio-economic progress.

As is well recognized here, Bhutan may be a tiny, landlocked country but is strategically important for India. After the PDP swept the polls on Saturday, senior government sources here said New Delhi was looking forward to continuing its "special and unique" relationship with Bhutan. They said India would not allow the rural poor in Bhutan to suffer and that efforts would be made to expedite terms and conditions for a fresh wave of financial assistance to Thimphu.

While New Delhi has painstakingly tried to convince all that Druk Phuensum Tshogpa (DPT) chief and former prime minister Jigme Thinley's policies were not a dampener in bilateral ties, and cited his nine visits to India in the past five years, the truth is that India doesn't mind seeing the back of Thinley.

New Delhi was alarmed not just by Thinley, who made himself the official ambassador of Bhutan's Gross National Happiness phenomenon, reaching out to Beijing but also the manner in which he established diplomatic ties with many other countries without bothering to take South Block into confidence.

While many in Bhutan have attributed motives to India's decision to cut subsidy on cooking gas and kerosene during the elections, official sources here said that for India the successful conduct of a second election is indicative of consolidation of democracy in Bhutan. "India has always held that it is happy to work with all in Bhutan. We look to continue the special and unique relationship," said a top government source.

What's interesting is that it was the PDP which seemed to be giving vent to India's concerns during the election when it repeatedly blamed DPT for strained ties with New Delhi. The party blamed Thinley's policies even for the subsidy cut by India.

Canadian to be freed in Mauritania

NOUAKCHOTT, Mauritania (AP) ? A 24-year-old Canadian man is to be released from a Mauritanian jail after being sentenced to 18 months in prison and a $2,000 fine for alleged ties to al-Qaida's North African branch, known as al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, officials said.

The Mauritanian appeals court decided on Sunday to free Canadian national Aaron Yoon, the same day as his sentencing, because he has already been imprisoned for the duration of his sentence, prosecutor Ahmed Ould Abdalla told The Associated Press.

"The court has decided to free the Canadian, Yoon, because he has already served his time. He will be expelled from Mauritania immediately," said Abdalla. Yoon was first arrested in December of 2011.

Prosecutors had sought a 10-year sentence for Yoon due to what they claimed was his "link to dangerous terrorist activity and his role in the recruitment of jihadists." Yoon has denied that he had any ties to terrorism, claiming he came to Mauritania only to learn Arabic and study the Quran.

Yoon reportedly travelled to the region with two other Canadians who were implicated in a terror attack on a BP-operated natural gas plant in southeastern Algeria earlier this year, one of the largest attacks in recent memory. It ended with the deaths of 37 hostages including American, French, Irish and Japanese nationals. The attack was claimed by Moktar Belmoktar, a former commander of al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, who split off from the al-Qaida chapter late last year in order to create his own group.

Belmoktar had previously carried out several attacks in Mauritania, which has served as a fertile recruiting ground for the jihadists, who now have several Mauritanians in their ranks.

In April, Canadian police confirmed the identities of two Canadians who were killed at the Ain Amenas gas plant in southeastern Algeria: Ali Medlej and Xristos Katsiroubas. Algeria's government has said they were involved in the attack as hostage takers.

During several visits by Amnesty International Canada in June and July 2012, Yoon claimed he was tortured in detention, leading him to sign a confession that has been used against him at every stage of the case, according to a statement issued last month by Alex Neve, secretary general of Amnesty International Canada.

The statement said Yoon attended high school in Ontario with Medlej and Katsiroubas. Yoon told Amnesty he left Canada with the two men in May 2011 to study Arabic and the Quran, first arriving in Morocco. They later traveled to Mauritania, studying at a school in Nouakchott before relocating to a school in Naim, a village 100 kilometers (62 miles) away.

Yoon told Amnesty that he was beaten in police custody soon after being detained in December 2011. "I couldn't answer many of their questions without a translator anyway as my Arabic was still pretty basic at that time," Yoon told Amnesty. "Simply asserting those rights is what unleashed the torture. They were furious with me."

He said he was beaten and hit with sticks of wood until he lost consciousness. Later, his hands and feet were tied behind his back, and the beating resumed after he was laid down on his stomach. It was after this second round of torture that he agreed to sign the confession saying he had planned to travel to Mali to join up with al-Qaida. Amnesty said the confession was written in Arabic and was never read or translated for him.

"The statement he signed has followed him everywhere since," Nave said. "Every official and every judge who has reviewed his case has relied on it."

Nave said there had been no witnesses or other evidence presented in court against Yoon. While Yoon was given a court-appointed lawyer for one appearance, he said the lawyer "did not actively intervene in the proceedings to defend him."

Amnesty said it could make no judgment on the allegations against Yoon, but noted that Yoon's account of being tortured was consistent with many other cases documented by the rights group.
