Basic Tips And Strategies On Affiliate Marketing | Internet Marketing ...

Due to their low start-up costs and apparent ease of management, many webmasters are tempted to employ affiliate marketing systems. The entire stocking, handling, and shipping process is seen to by the vendor, not the webmaster. However, affiliate marketing has nuances that sometimes require careful attention.

Try to sell something that is quite popular already. A lot of webmasters avoid the most popular affiliate marketing products, thinking that the competition will be too tough to deal with. Generally speaking, however, it is often much easier to enjoy high sales rates in a proven niche than it is in a relatively unpopular niche. You should remember that the popular niches have a buyer pool that is already primed for the products and connecting with them is the only challenge. Your priority is finding a way to distinguish yourself from the competition, no matter what niche you get into.

Disclose your affiliations to your readers. Customers will know you are honest and be more likely to buy.

Only put your stamp of approval on products you believe in. Whatever you recommend should be a reflection on your business. Customers will have more faith in your business if you recommend other good products. A good way to keep your customers is to continue promoting good products that have good prices.

If you have banner ads, you should put a trivia question on one and make it so that the user has to visit your site in order to get the answer. Most people will be unable to leave without clicking on the banner. Entice your visitors by providing discounts to those who answer the questions correctly.

Don?t clutter your website with too many banner ads. This will make your site look horrible and drive off potential customers. Your site should be mostly content, not banners, and the banners that are there should be spread out across the page.

When someone visits your themed website with that particular theme in mind, that is what they are thinking about. Unless the link is sports related, placing a link on an affiliate site can not help you. If the site has relevant links, people will be more likely to access them.

Use various venues for advertising affiliate products. There are those that find their products online. Other customers like a physical brochure or enjoy seeing a product on a flier. Some are avid coupon clippers and like to get a discount. As you expand the scope and format of your advertising, you will grab the attention of many potential new clients.

Always be truthful and let your readers know that you are making money when they buy using your links. Your readers understand when you put up a link to an affiliate so do not try and hide it. Through this act of integrity your business is surely to grow.

If you want to be successful at affiliate marketing, know your audience. Understanding their wants, and needs is a smart marketing move. Analyze your site traffic to determine what is driving the most people to your site. What do your customers look for when they visit your site?

Do business with those affiliate companies that provide resource support to their affiliates. These companies are in it to make profit just like you are. They know the ins and outs of marketing and what techniques are effective,. Those affiliate companies that share their selling secrets do better in the marketplace. That means better sales for them and higher commissions for you.

Show potential customers pictures of customers using the product. By giving your potential customer a lot of good information, you are helping him or her to decide whether or not to trust you and purchase your product. This can lead to good word-of-mouth advertising in the future.

Often, communicating not only protects, but also strengthens, the bond with affiliate partners. Frequent communication works as a way to protect your affiliate revenue stream. Good affiliates are worth their weight in gold, and so you must ensure you hang onto them.

Acting on tips from a few sources can be more effective than reading dozens of different opinions. You put in time with no compensation upfront, as well as take the risk of not making any money. Recognize that if you continually research new techniques and never apply any, you?re stalling. Choose a few good tips, put down the books, and put what you?ve learned into action.

Proving that you are a legitimate affiliate marketer takes some strategic finesse. Your links should be more subtle. You want your customers to be comfortable buying through you.

Choose your affiliates with your target market in mind. Make sure that the advertising on your site matches what your site is selling. Those who visit your site have expectations about the content, including ads, they might see. Place ads that cater to your customers and take advantage of this idea.

When you start your affiliate marketing venture, take the time to locate affiliates that can offer you the types of products and services that you are interested in promoting. Entering into agreements with a vast range of affiliate networks will give you multiple lines of income. Do some research before you accept an affiliate to ensure that you feel comfortable promoting them.

Learn about how the affiliate marketing program tracks outside orders when you choose a program. If your site visitors place orders on the affiliate?s site and those purchases are not properly linked to your ID, then you run the risk of losing a good amount of commission.

For the most profitable affiliate marketing program, retain only those affiliates who have proven they can make you money. Watch how your affiliates perform on a regular basis. Never be afraid to cut ties with an affiliate that doesn?t make you any money, and go with someone who is more profitable.

Continue to reach your goals beyond making a profit. If you work hard all of the time you will see your income go up. It may be difficult to invest the time and patience at first, but in the end, it will be well worth your while.

Youth Gain Voices Through Students' Public Speaking Campaign ...

Three Amador Valley High School students are giving community youth a voice through their public speaking campaign.

Juniors Melody Huang, Alice Deng, and Shilpa Krish founded "RSVP" ? an acronym for repertoire, speech, voice, and presentation. These make up what the campaign focuses on when it comes to strengthening kids' public speaking skills. They came up with the idea last school year and coordinated with the Pleasanton and San Leandro Libraries to host classes there over the summer.

After gaining public speaking experience from their high school's DECA Chapter, a national business organization targeted towards high school students, they were inspired to start their own campaign to help others.

"We know that speech deliverance often causes a lot of anxiety and stress, and having been through that phase ourselves, we wanted to change that for our youth," Huang said.

To go along with their motto and logo "Just Say It!" they wanted students to come out being more assertive in stating their opinions in front of an audience.?

Aside from founding the campaign, the three are executive directors who work as expansion coordinators, operations managers, and marketing coordinators.

Nearly a dozen other instructors and interns help with the campaign at both the pleasanton and San Leandro locations. Huang hopes to expand the campaign to other cities like Hayward, San Ramon, Castro Valley, and Fremont. They already receive participants from neighboring cities like Dublin and Livermore. Her dream is to take it statewide and beyond.

According to Huang, the number of students that attend varies depending on the classes, but on average they get about 20 to 30 students.

Instructors are available to provide students of different ages one-on-one attention to assess their abilities and provide feedback. Huang said students receive impromptu speeches ? normally a few paragraphs long ? which they then practice reading in a few minutes prior to giving a semi-formal presentation.

A variety of games like charades, staring contests, and "guessing the voice," also help students by targetting specific areas of public speaking such as gestures, eye contact and voice.

"These tend to be a challenge for them, and urge them to think on their feet," Huang said.

Overall, the campaign has been proving to be a success. Huang said she finds that the most rewarding part of the campaign is to see students' improvements and enthusiasm during each lesson.

"We love interacting and making friends with the new members, but we also love seeing old clients. We are very happy to know that we've helped to make a difference in our society and helped build confidence in our youngest generation," she said.

To learn more about the RSVP campaign and how you can participate, contact Melody Huang at melodyhuang2007@gmail.com.

Suspected Colo. movie theater gunman?s new look

James Holmes in jail photos from July and September (Arapahoe Co. Sheriff's Office)

All eyes in the packed courtroom were trained on the door just to the left of the jury box. The feeling was tense as we waited to get our first look at the man suspected of committing one of the worst mass shootings in modern-day American history.

Perched on my tiptoes, I quickly scribbled in my reporters notebook as James Holmes was escorted into the room.

"Armed deputies in royal blue."

"Looked down ... shackled in front."

"Maroon jumpsuit, curly red hair."

Three days earlier, 12 people were killed and 58 others wounded when police say Holmes went on a shooting rampage during a sold-out showing of "The Dark Knight Rises." Some reported that Holmes told arresting officers he was the Joker, the infamous villain from the Batman movies.

In court, it appeared he was trying to look the part. His wavy hair was dyed a cartoonish orange-red. He appeared dazed. His eyes opened and closed often. His head bobbed.

Now, eight weeks later, a strikingly different Holmes arrived in court. Gone were the dyed hair and mutton chop sideburns.

Reporters at Thursday's hearing said the 24-year-old former neuroscience student looked around the room at lawyers and journalists, smiled, and seemed to follow the courtroom conversation. The Associated Press also wrote that he appeared to be moving his mouth but not actually talking.

At least one family member receiving updates about Holmes from the courtroom told the AP that the alleged gunman's demeanor was an act to appear mentally ill.

"He's just putting on a show," said Greg Medek of Aurora, whose daughter Micayla, 23, died in the shooting. "I don't think he's crazy. He's just evil."

(AP Photo / Scott R. Galvin)

(AP) ? Sixteen men and women who rejected lenient plea deals are facing lengthy prison terms for their convictions in the hair- and beard-cutting attacks on fellow Amish in Ohio.

The trial focused on an internal Amish dispute and offered a rare and sometimes lurid glimpse into the closed and usually self-regulating community of believers.

The defendants, with about 50 children between them and including six couples, were convicted Thursday in U.S. District Court after 4? days of deliberations.

The defendants had rejected plea deals which offered leniency, with some likely to face only probation. With the convictions, some defendants could now get sentences of 20 years or more.

Members of the defense team said appeals were likely and would focus on whether the beard-cuttings amounted to religious-based hate crimes.

Judge Dan Aaron Polster scheduled sentencing for Jan. 24.

Prosecutors planned to file a request Friday to revoke bond and lock up defendants who had remained free pending trial. The judge asked the defense team to respond by Tuesday.

Rhonda Kotnik, representing Kathryn Miller, said the verdicts would destroy the Amish community of about 25 families.

"The community is going to be ripped apart. I don't know what's going to happen to all their children," she said.

Samuel Mullet Sr., 66, the leader of the breakaway group, was found guilty of orchestrating the cuttings last fall.

The government said the cuttings were an attempt to shame members of Mullet's community who he believed were straying from their beliefs. His followers were found guilty of carrying out the attacks, which terrorized the normally peaceful religious settlement that aims to live simply and piously.

Prosecutors and witnesses described how sons pulled their father out of bed and chopped off his beard in the moonlight and how women surrounded their mother-in-law and cut off two feet of her hair, taking it down to the scalp in some places.

Prosecutors say they targeted hair because it carries spiritual significance in their faith.

All the defendants are members of Mullet's settlement that he founded in eastern Ohio near the West Virginia panhandle. The Amish eschew many conveniences of modern life, including electrical appliances and automobiles, and embrace their centuries-old roots.

Federal officials said the verdicts would send a message about religious intolerance.

"The victims in this case are members of a peaceful and traditional religion who simply wanted to be left to practice their religion in peace," U.S. Attorney Steven Dettelbach said. "Unfortunately, the defendants denied them this basic right and they did so in the most violent way."

Members of the Amish community who sat through the trial hurried into a hired van without commenting, some covering their faces.

Defense attorneys said the defendants were bewildered by the verdicts.

"They really don't understand the court system the way the rest of us have, being educated and reading newspapers," said Joseph Dubyak, whose client, Linda Schrock, has 10 children with her husband, who was also convicted.

The suspects had argued that the Amish are bound by different rules guided by their religion and that the government had no place getting involved in what amounted to a family or church dispute.

Mullet wasn't accused of cutting anyone's hair. But prosecutors said he planned and encouraged his sons and the others, mocked the victims in jailhouse phone calls and was given a paper bag stuffed with the hair of one victim.

One bishop told jurors his chest-length beard was chopped to within 1? inches of his chin when four or five men dragged him out of his farmhouse in a late-night home invasion.

Prosecutors told jurors that Mullet thought he was above the law and free to discipline those who went against him based on his religious beliefs. Before his arrest last November, he defended what he believes is his right to punish people who break church laws.

"You have your laws on the road and the town ? if somebody doesn't obey them, you punish them. But I'm not allowed to punish the church people?" Mullet told The Associated Press last October.

The hair cuttings, he said, were a response to continuous criticism he'd received from other Amish religious leaders about him being too strict, including shunning people in his own group.

Defense attorneys acknowledged that the hair cuttings took place and that crimes were committed but contend that prosecutors were overreaching by calling them hate crimes.

Witnesses testified that Mullet had complete control over the settlement that he founded two decades ago and described how his religious teachings and methods of punishments deviated from Amish traditions.

One woman testified that Mullet coerced women at his settlement into having sex with him, and others said he encouraged men to sleep in chicken coops as punishment.

Horticultural hijacking: The dark side of beneficial soil bacteria

ScienceDaily (Sep. 21, 2012) ? It's a battleground down there -- in the soil where plants and bacteria dwell. Even though beneficial root bacteria come to the rescue when a plant is being attacked by pathogens, there's a dark side to the relationship between the plant and its white knight.

According to research reported by a University of Delaware scientific team in the September online edition of Plant Physiology, the most highly cited plant journal, a power struggle ensues as the plant and the "good" bacteria vie over who will control the plant's immune system.

"For the brief period when the beneficial soil bacterium Bacillus subtilis is associated with the plant, the bacterium hijacks the plant's immune system," says Harsh Bais, assistant professor of plant and soil sciences, whose laboratory group led the research at the Delaware Biotechnology Institute.

In studies of microbe-associated molecular patterns (MAMPs), a hot area of plant research, the UD team found that B. subtilis produces a small antimicrobial protein that suppresses the root defense response momentarily in the lab plant Arabidopsis.

"It's the first time we've shown classically how suppression by a benign bacteria works," Bais says. "There are shades of gray -- the bacteria that we view as beneficial don't always work toward helping plants."

In the past, Bais' lab has shown that plants under aerial attack send an SOS message, through secretions of the chemical compound malate, to recruit the beneficial B. subtilis to come help.

In more recent work, Bais and his collaborators showed that MAMP perception of pathogens at the leaf level could trigger a similar response in plants. Through an intraplant, long-distance signaling, from root to shoot, beneficial bacteria are recruited to forge a system-wide defense, boosting the plant's immune system, the team demonstrated. In that study, the Bais team also questioned the overall tradeoffs involved in plants that are associated with so-called beneficial microbes.

In the latest work, involving the testing of more than 1,000 plants, the researchers shed more light on the relationship. They show that B. subtilis uses a secreted peptide to suppress the immune response in plants. It is known that plants synthesize several antimicrobial compounds to ward off bacteria, Bais says.

The team also shows that when plant leaves were treated with a foliar MAMP -- flagellin, a structural protein in the flagellum, the tail-like appendage that bacteria use like a propeller -- it triggered the recruitment of beneficial bacteria to the plant roots.

"The ability of beneficial bacteria to suppress plant immunity may facilitate efficient colonization of rhizobacteria on the roots," Bais says. Rhizobacteria form an important symbiotic relationship with the plant, fostering its growth by converting nitrogen in the air into a nutrient form the plant can use.

"We don't know how long beneficial bacteria could suppress the plant immune response, but we do know there is a very strong warfare under way underground," Bais says, noting that his lab is continuing to explore these interesting questions. "We are just beginning to understand this interaction between plants and beneficial soil bacteria."

The lead author of the research article was Venkatachalam Lakshmanan, a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences; Sherry Kitto, professor of plant and soil sciences; Jeffrey Caplan, associate director of UD's Bio-Imaging Center; Yu-Sung Wu, director of the Protein Production Facility; Daniel B. Kearns, associate professor in the Department of Biology at Indiana University; and Yi-Huang Hsueh , of the Graduate School of Biotechnology and Bioengineering at Yuan Ze University, Taiwan.

The research was supported by grants from the National Science Foundation.
