Dick Cheney says Romney?s tax returns are a distraction

Spinners and Winners

Dick Cheney has heart -- specifically, a new heart. And with it comes a fiery and defiant Cheney that had been absent in recent years.

In an exclusive interview with ABC News and Yahoo News, Cheney says he feels "excellent," and reflects on how far he has come since 2010 -- when he was in end stage heart failure and had undergone a grueling operation to have a pump installed in his heart.

"Two years ago this time I was on a respirator, heavily sedated. Just had a pump? installed on my heart because my heart had gotten so weak after six heart attacks and 30-some years of heart disease that it was, you know, it was at the end." he said.

Cheney, 71, weighed in on the 2012 presidential race, wading into an issue that has been plaguing presumptive nominee Mitt Romney: tax returns. Back in 2000, as a potential vice-presidential pick, Cheney released ten years of tax returns. Then Governor Bush at the time also released ten years. Romney has released just two, though Cheney says he has "great confidence" in what has been released.

"If he had two years out, they'd want four. If he had four years out, they'd want six. If he had six years out, they'd want ten," said Cheney.

"It's a distraction," he added. "I'd say do what he feels like doing. If this is his decision, fine. Let's get on with it."

The former vice president was also defended his stance on gay marriage. During the vice presidential debate in 2000, Cheney broke from party ranks and became the most prominent Republican to endorse gay marriage.

"People should be free to enter into any kind of relationship they want to enter into," Cheney said at the time. "It's really no one else's business in terms of trying to regulate or prohibit behavior in that regard." Cheney's daughter is openly gay, and married her longtime partner Heather Poe earlier this year. The father-of-the bride did not go.

"We wished them well. ?She wanted to avoid having it be a media circus or having it become part of the political debate," said Cheney.

Asked if he wished he would have pushed harder on the legalization of gay marriage while in office, Cheney gave a defiant no.

"Why?" asked the former vice president, adding "I was out there 12 years ago in the first campaign in 2000, in the debate with Joe Lieberman in front of millions of Americans on live television and I laid out my position then and it hasn't changed. No. I've addressed it and moved on."

Cheney's also moved on from Republican conventions to more leisurely activities. You won't find the former Republican heavyweight in Tampa later this month, though you may catch a glimpse of him up in Canada.

"I've got a fishing trip planned."

ABC News' Avery Miller contributed to this report.

San Antonio Mayor Castro to deliver Democratic convention keynote

San Antonio Mayor Juli?n Castro will deliver the keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, Democrats announced Tuesday in a move showcasing the weight of the Latino vote in the hard-fought 2012 campaign.

Castro, 37, will be the first Latino keynote speaker at a Democratic National Convention. He and First Lady Michelle Obama will address the gathering on its opening night, September 4.

In a video message, Castro called the high-profile mission "an honor I don't take lightly" and quipped "I've got some big shoes to fill" -- a direct reference to the 2004 Democratic convention, where a little-known Senate candidate from Illinois delivered the keynote speech. Four years later, Barack Obama was president.

Castro's video sounds like something of a dry run. He defends Obama's landmark health care overhaul, his record on national security and veterans' issues, and says the president "brought the economy back from the brink" after the 2007-2008 global financial meltdown. He also trumpets Obama's pursuit of the auto industry bailout and knocks Mitt Romney's editorial on the issue, which was entitled "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt." And he highlights private sector job growth ? which the president's reelection campaign hopes will prove an antidote to stubbornly high national unemployment of 8.2 percent and gloomy growth forecasts.

"I know he's not done yet. We've got a lot more work to do," Castro said. "Estamos unidos!" (We are united).

The news cements Castro's standing as a rising star in Democratic politics. A convention press release announcing the movie highlighte that Castro was "raised by a single mother" in "the working-class West Side of San Antonio" and went on ? like Obama ? to get a Harvard Law School degree.

"Having both the First Lady and Mayor Castro speak on the opening night of our convention will bring together two incredible leaders whose life stories both embody the promise of America, that if you work hard and play by the rules, you can make it," said Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, the convention chair.

Romney riles Palestinians with digs at culture, economy

RAMALLAH, West Bank (Reuters) - Palestinians accused U.S. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney of racism on Monday by suggesting disparities between the Israeli and Palestinian economies had cultural roots, while ignoring Israel's occupation of the West Bank.

In a speech to fundraisers in Jerusalem, Romney, visiting Israel to boost his electoral credentials ahead of a November 6 election bid against President Barack Obama, said Israel's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was about twice that of the Palestinians.

He said Israel's GDP per capita was $21,000, while for Palestinians it was $10,000, and called it "a dramatic, stark difference in economic vitality".

The chief Palestinian negotiator, Saeb Erekat told Reuters that Romney's comments amounted to "a racist statement that shows a lack of knowledge".

He added: "Everyone knows that the Palestinians cannot reach their full potential given the Israeli restrictions imposed on them."

Romney made no reference to Israel's tight control of most territory where Palestinians live, the West Bank, since capturing it in a 1967 war. Western-backed peace talks aimed at Palestinians establishing a state there collapsed in 2010.

The figures Romney gave also seemed at odds with Western estimates suggesting the GDP gap is in effect much wider, with the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency estimating Israel's at $31,400 in 2011, and the Palestinians' at about $2,900 for 2008.

Romney went on to say at the event where he reportedly raised more than $1 million for his campaign, that "if you could learn anything from the economic history of the world it's this: culture makes all the difference.... I recognize the hand of providence in selecting this place".

Romney did not travel to the nearby West Bank during his two-day stay in Israel, finding time only for a brief meeting with Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad. He later flew to Poland on the last leg of his international tour.

The controversy he kicked up among Palestinians followed irritation in Britain last week when he questioned London's readiness to stage the Olympic Games.

JERUSALEM DISPUTE

Palestinians also accused Romney of undermining peace prospects in a speech he made on Sunday, when he called Jerusalem "the capital of Israel", ignoring their own claims to the city and most world opinion.

"We condemn his statements. Those who speak about the two-state solution should know that there can be no Palestinian state without East Jerusalem," Erekat said.

"What this man is doing here is just promoting extremism, violence and hatred, and this is absolutely unacceptable," Erekat said. "His statements are just rewarding the occupation and aggression."

Israel seized eastern Jerusalem in 1967 and annexed it as part of its capital in a move never recognized internationally. A U.N Security Council resolution condemns a 1980 Israeli law that declared Jerusalem its "complete and undivided" capital.

Most countries, including the United States, have not recognized Israel's declaration and have kept their embassies in the coastal city of Tel Aviv.

Previous U.S. presidential candidates, including Senator Obama in June 2008, have referred to Jerusalem as Israel's capital ahead of elections, only to row back when taking power and suggest the issue should be resolved by negotiations.

A senior aide to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Nabil Abu Rdeineh, said Romney's statements were unhelpful, stood in the way of a peace settlement and "contradict the previous positions held by the American administration".

Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) secretary-general Yasser Abed Rabbo said: "American policy makers must abandon hypocrisy and stop attempting to gain votes at the expense of the Palestinian people's rights."

In an interview with CNN, Romney refused to be pinned down on whether he would recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital if he beats Obama and wins the White House.

"A nation has the capacity to choose its own capital city, and Jerusalem is Israel's capital," he said.

Pressed on whether he would make the move on becoming president, Romney said:

"I'm not going to make foreign policy for my nation, particularly while I'm on foreign soil. My understanding is the policy of our nation has been a desire to move our embassy ultimately to the capital."

Seeking American Jewish and fundamentalist Christian votes, Romney has criticized Obama on Israel, alleging last year that the president had "thrown Israel under a bus" in pushing hard for a two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians.

Different Kinds Of Addiction:Beneficial Treatments | The Board ...

Addiction can be effectively treated if the person chooses to cease the activity or habit in which he is addicted to. This can be done by using self help mechanisms. If an addict wants to ask minimal outside help, he can opt for the services of various support groups. Residential facilities are also available if he needs a more intense medication.

The common procedure of treating addiction in drugs is through detoxification and therapy programs. Medical professionals use cleansing drugs to eliminate the harmful substances present in the addict?s system. The therapy will help a patient recover quickly as a therapist tries to help fix other current issues of the patient. There are drug and alcohol rehab programs which are designed especially for people who are addicted to alcohol.

A patient must understand the nature of his addiction if he wishes to be treated effectively. Addiction to gambling can be also treated clinically with certain drugs. Other types of addictions like food, computer and some types of substances are generally psychological. This can be easily treated through therapy and by participating in various support groups. Many alcohol addicts have successfully achieved recovery by attending drug and alcohol rehab programs.

Drug addiction may often cause severe complications in the body leading to death. Taking the drug addict to a rehabilitation center can be the best option. These facilities provide a managed environment wherein patients are separated and monitored to determine whether the treatment is effective. The condition of every drug addicted individual is not the same. Therefore, the treatment administered to each patient may also vary.

Severe cases of addiction often cause mental and emotional disorders. Study shows that there is less percentage of patients who successfully eradicate their habits completely. Since addiction is now considered as a health issue, doctor?s can now prescribe drugs and dietary programs that will help patients reduce the level of dependency and improve their health. Support groups which may include the addict?s friends and family members can also help him to slowly and completely remove his abusive habits.

There are many ways of dealing with addiction which are now available for all types of patients. These may include proper medications, therapy and hospitalization for severe cases. Patients are required to consult a doctor first to recognize the level and the type of addiction he has prior to making a decision to take a treatment procedure.

(AP) ? Ryan Lochte turned his much-anticipated duel with Michael Phelps into a blowout, pulling away to win the Olympic 400-meter individual medley by more than 3 seconds Saturday night. Even more stunning: Phelps didn't win any medal at all.

After barely qualifying for the evening final in a performance that hinted at trouble ahead, Phelps struggled to a fourth-place finish and was denied his 17th career Olympic medal. When it was done, he could barely pull himself out of the pool.

"It was just a crappy race," Phelps said. "I felt fine the first 200, then I don't know. They just swam a better race than me, a smarter race than me, and were better prepared than me. That's why they're on the medal stand."

Brazil's Thiago Pereira took the silver, and Japan's Kosuke Hagino claimed the bronze ? beating Phelps by a fairly comfortable 34-hundredths of a second for the last spot on the podium.

It was the first time since the 2000 Sydney Games, when Phelps was a 15-year-old unknown who qualified in just one event, that he didn't win at least a bronze in an Olympic race. Since then, he was 16-of-16 ? 14 golds and two bronzes.

Lochte climbed out of the pool with a big smile, waving to the crowd and looking about a fresh as he did at the start. He had predicted this would be his year and, for the first race at least, he was right on the mark.

"I think I'm kind of in shock right now," he said. As for Phelps, "I know he gave it everything he had. That's all you can ask for."

Phelps was trying to become the first male swimmer to win the same individual event at three straight Olympics. He'll have three more chances at a threepeat before he's done in London, having also won the 200 individual medley, plus the 100 and 200 butterfly, at Athens and Beijing.

But this was shocking, totally out of character for a swimmer who won six gold medals in Athens, then a record eight in Beijing to break Mark Spitz's Olympic record.

Phelps fell behind right from the start in the butterfly, his trademark stroke. From there, it was all Lochte. He stretched his margin in the backstroke and breaststroke, then cruised to the gold in the freestyle, a good three body lengths ahead of the rest of the field.

"It's frustrating, that's all I can say. It's pretty upsetting," Phelps said. "The biggest thing now is to try to look forward. I have a bunch of other races, and hopefully we can finish a lot better than how we started."

Phelps' close call in the morning prelims put him in an already uncustomary position ? swimming on the outside in the No. 8 lane. He only had one swimmer next to him and no idea what Lochte and the others in the middle of the pool were doing.

Not that it would have mattered.

"I don't think the lane had anything to do with it," Phelps said. "I just couldn't really put myself in a good spot for that race. It's frustrating for sure. ... It's just really frustrating to start off on a bad note like this.

"I was lucky to get in," he added, referring to his slow time in the morning. "I had a chance to put myself in a spot to start off on a good note and didn't do it."

Lochte gave the Americans their first gold medal of the London Games and put himself in position to fulfill the promise he showed at last year's world championships, where he won five golds and beat Phelps in their two head-to-head meetings.

The friendly rivals have one more showdown in London, in the 200 individual medley. Phelps edged Lochte in that race during the U.S. Olympics trials, but Lochte appears to be on top of his game when it really counts.

About a half-hour after the race, the laid-back Floridian returned to the medal podium to receive the fourth gold medal of his career.

Phelps was nowhere to be found.

Family of Aloha man killed by deputies speaks of his struggle with ...

"Get off the property," Jeffery David Anderson told his wife, Susan. Moments later, he fired his .22-caliber rifle toward the sky. Then again.

Susan Anderson was familiar with her husband's erratic behavior. She had moved in with a friend for a few days after arguing with him, but, needing clothing, returned July 7 to the Aloha home the couple had shared for 30 years. Faced with another argument and the gun, she left.

An hour later, Jeffery David Anderson, 56, lay dying in the street, shot by Washington County sheriff''s deputies. Neighbors and deputies say Anderson had walked along Southwest 195th Avenue near his home, pointing his loaded rifle at passing vehicles, and ultimately at deputies.

His death, which came a few hours later at OHSU Hospital, is the latest chapter in a series of shootings by police agencies responding to mental health-related calls in the Portland metropolitan area.

For example, Washington County sheriff's deputies in June fatally shot Robert Kimball Fox, 52, of Aloha, who authorities say was suicidal and had pointed a loaded rifle at deputies. Portland police officers in January fatally shot Brad Lee Morgan, 21, who officials said was threatening to jump off a downtown parking structure and eventually pointed a fake gun at officers.

Authorities responding to mental health-related calls -- especially when weapons are introduced -- must make split-second decisions in unpredictable scenarios, said Washington County Sheriff Pat Garrett. Police can't dodge bullets and de-escalate a situation simultaneously, he said.

"When you introduce a gun or weapon, that changes everything," he said.

Jeffery Anderson was a severely depressed alcoholic who began pulling away from his wife and family during the past year. Susan Anderson described a pattern of unpredictable behavior. One moment, he apologized for his drinking. The next, he was angry.

His family struggled to deal with a husband, father, brother, who was spiraling into deeper depression and alcoholism. They loved him, but they didn't know when or how to help. Now, his family says, they are stuck with a stark truth: It's too late.

The night of the shooting, Susan Anderson sat in a detective's car as she learned what happened to her husband.

"Never in my whole marriage would I have thought that...," the 55-year-old later said, failing to complete the sentence as she started to cry. "Something in him snapped."

***

For more than 15 years, Jeffery Anderson cleaned up spilled lunches and mopped floors as a custodian at Hillsboro's Minter Bridge Elementary School. At his funeral, members of the school's staff presented the family with a scrapbook of photographs and notes on colored paper about his helpfulness and warm personality.

The couple married 35 years ago, moving into their Aloha home five years later. They had two daughters, Sarah and Stephanie. Jeffery Anderson's relationship with them, his wife said, could be rocky.

He loved to play with his five grandchildren, who knew him as "papa." His sister, Kathy Milberger, 50, described her brother as a protector, and five years ago, she moved to Beaverton to be closer to him.

He enjoyed camping, trips to the coast and listening to music, especially Bob Marley. He wrote poetry.

He was a talker, but, at the same time, a loner. He pinched pennies and was a pack rat, stashing away belongings for years.

"It was hard for him to let go of things," his wife said.

Sensitive and patriotic, Jeffery Anderson was deeply troubled by the state of America, what he saw as societal values in decline as banks and big business were on the rise. He sobbed when the first troops were killed in Afghanistan and Iraq.

"He needed to push it away," Susan Anderson said. "He didn't like to hear about all the people dying all the time."

He talked about the issues so much, she said, "It got to where I couldn't listen anymore."

***

In the past year, Jeffery Anderson's drinking noticeably increased. He'd have beers at home in the evening, growing more and more depressed.

For at least a year, he was prescribed an anti-depressant, citalopram, but in the months before the shooting, he wasn't taking it consistently.

"I always thought he'd snap out of it," Susan Anderson said. "But he didn't."

She thinks her husband purchased the rifle about a year ago. Leading up to the shooting, Jeffery Anderson mentioned the weapon more frequently. He bragged about the gun, talked about how it worked and his need to protect his property.

Yet Susan Anderson never felt afraid. "I guess I should have been," she said.

"He was dwelling on everything negative," she said, growing emotional. "Instead of being grateful for how good our lives are."

Milberger said her brother would sometimes mention suicide, but never talked specifically about hurting himself.

"He felt as if he was going to die young," she said.

Two days before his death, Jeffery Anderson left work early and went home. When one of his daughters stopped by that day, he was intoxicated, his wife said. He behaved strangely, showing his firearm to his grandchildren.

"Something's wrong with papa," the children told their mother.

At home, his daughter reflected on her dad's behavior, and called police to have deputies check on him. The sheriff's office said deputies on July 5 responded to a report that Jeffery Anderson was suicidal.

Deputies talked with Anderson at his home and took him to a hospital for further treatment. Susan Anderson said she wasn't aware of her husband making any suicidal statements.

Jeffery Anderson was taken to Providence St. Vincent Medical Center, where he was evaluated and released four hours later, his wife said. Federal privacy laws prohibit the hospital from releasing when he was admitted and discharged, or the reasons for his release, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

After his release, Anderson was angry that police were called and he had been hospitalized.

That anger bled into the next days. On July 6, Susan Anderson tried calling him; he didn't answer the phone. Milberger stopped by to check on her brother. She knocked. Nothing. She called. No answer.

She tried the door, and it was unlocked, she said. She found Jeffery Anderson asleep in bed.

Susan Anderson went to her home the next day, July 7. She tried to calm him down. "I kept saying Jeff, honey, I didn't call the police," she said.

Later that night, when she learned her husband had been shot and wounded, Susan Anderson broke down inside the detective's car. Initially, authorities told her they thought Jeffery Anderson would make it, then they told her he had died.

Milberger interprets her brother's actions that day as suicide by cop.

His wife and sister aren't mad or bitter toward deputies. They hurt because they know that day changed everyone involved. Jeffery Anderson is gone. Life won't be the same for his survivors or for the deputies who shot him.

They wanted to help their brother and husband. They wish the hospital had kept him longer. They wish they could have forced him to get help.

They were planning an intervention, but the fear that he would become enraged kept them from reaching out. ?

"Never wait that long," Milberger said. "You need to catch something, intervene way sooner than we did."

Every Auto Insurance Company Is Scared Of These Tips! | Cheap ...

Auto insurance is large part of being a responsible vehicle owner. However, auto insurance policies seem to be written in the most confusing terms possible. This article can help you to better understand what all of those terms mean. By understanding the terms of the auto insurance world, you will be a more informed consumer.

If you do not drive a lot, you may qualify and receive a low mileage bonus on your car insurance. In order to be eligible for this type of discount, you generally have to drive below 7,500 miles per year. If you take any type of public transportation to commute to work, you may be able to get a commuter discount as well.

Be sure to remove people from your policy if they are not using your vehicle. By taking off drivers who no longer drive the vehicle, you can save money on lower premiums. Having a young driver on your insurance can increase the amount you pay, so you may want to consider removing them from your policy.

To cut down on your monthly insurance bill, try cutting back on the amount of miles you drive each year. Premiums may be greatly reduced simply by driving less.

Switching vehicles between members of the family can raise premiums. By having only one driver for each car, you will get a better premium for your insurance policy.

You should weigh all the options when you are thinking of purchasing an extended parts warranty through your insurance. Auto parts makers guarantee their products, while the repair shops also guarantee their work. Don?t pay your insurance company for coverage you already get elsewhere.

Body shops often know who the best insurance providers are. Body shop employees deal with insurance adjusters often. They will be able to give you information on which companies pay out quickly and which are a constant problem for customers.

Safety features can save you hundreds of dollars, so make a list of available safety features when shopping for car insurance. Safety features like car alarms or side-impact airbags can bring you discounts since they minimize accident or theft claims you may have in the future. You will find this to be relevant about aged cars as well.

Make sure that any vehicles you no longer own are removed from your insurance plan immediately after you?ve gotten rid of them. Having any unnecessary cars on your policy can add up quickly to wasted premium being paid.

Trade in your sports car for a more moderate vehicle. Sports cars cost significantly more to insure than many others. Purchase a car that is more low-profile. A larger engine also generally comes with higher insurance costs. Sporty cars are more expensive to insure because they are usually the cars that thieves steal.

Buying insurance as a bundle leads to paying lower rates. You can insure your house and all vehicles with one insurer and save a good deal of money. To ensure you get sufficient coverage and still pay low premiums, you might be better off with two separate policies.

Location matters when it comes to insurance premiums. Moving to a new city or state could drastically reduce your premiums. Premiums and insurance requirements can vary widely depending on your region. Thus, you might find a cheaper rate if you move somewhere else.

Auto insurance contracts are written in such a way that every legal angle is covered in the event of a lawsuit, but this makes the language harder for a layperson to understand. The following article will help you gain an understanding of this terminology in order to help you make an informed decision when choosing car insurance. When you make the effort to understand insurance policies, you will have faith in your own ability to make appropriate choices as a customer.

Malaysian giant MOL enters Australia's online gaming space with ...

The real-action, online gaming is the fastest-growing segment of the market. In fact, by 2014, online games will itself be a billion-dollar market, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers? projection.

So, it?s not a huge surprise to see some M&A action in this space as companies jostle for market share.

Recently, Ocash, the Australian startup, acquired OnlineGamez Australia, a distributor of online game credits in Australia and New Zealand. This week,?Malaysian Internet payments giant MOL Global announced the acquisition of a majority stake in Ocash itself.

?This is a significant step for MOL to continue to build and strengthen its business strategy across the Asia Pacific region,? said Craig White, president of MOL Global.

White said the partnership would ?provide more business opportunities for our region?s game developers and publishers as they will be able to extend their reach via MOL to consumers outside the Asian region.?

MOL is one of the largest online payment providers in the world. It has more than 600,000 physical and online payment channels, besides partnerships with over 150 online game publishers and social networks worldwide including Facebook, Zynga and Electronic Arts.

Ocash founder Budi Handoko has been named the chief executive of MOL Australia, and will power the company?s growth Down Under.

?We identify ourselves in line with the vision of MOL and the synergy between both organisations will allow our businesses to reach new heights,? said Handoko, an online game specialist. ?At the same time, our growing player community will be able to gain new secured channels to purchase various popular digital products such as Facebook Credits, as well as be introduced to MOL?s huge portal of international and Asian games.?

Ocash has specialised in processing payments for online games credits in the Australia and New Zealand markets. Its flagship product ? ocash points ? is a virtual credit utilised by online game enthusiasts to purchase popular game credits from various game publishers.

PricewaterhouseCoopers predicts consumer spending on games in Australia will increase to $1,584 million in 2014, mainly on the strength of growth in online games and wireless games. Estimated compound annual growth in consumer spending for online games (13.6%) and wireless games (13%) for 2010-2014 is significantly higher than that for consoles and handheld devices (5.8%).

Fat lab lock-in: Can spicy pills help you lose weight?

What it's like to run a gauntlet of metabolism tests to aid research into a spice-based pill designed to trick the body into burning off excess fat

See more in our gallery: "A human guinea pig in the brown fat lab"

IT'S early evening, and I'm facing a dilemma of some delicacy - whether or not to break wind. Let me explain...

I'm poised to be voluntarily trapped in a room for the night as part of research to find new treatments for obesity at the Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, UK. The aim of the experiment is to see if brown fat, a special type of fat tissue that turns energy obtained from food into heat, can be coaxed into burning more unwanted white fat than usual. They intend to do this using a simple food supplement - a daily capsule of spicy ingredients such as chilli pepper or cinnamon - aimed at mimicking the effects of being in the cold.

Recruited as a control, I've spent the afternoon undergoing a battery of tests to serve as reference data for how people in reasonably good health burn energy. Investigator Andy Whittle at the University of Cambridge explains that comparisons with this data will help establish whether people burn more energy than normal when kept in the cold (at 18??C for 2 hours) or when given the spicy food capsules.

I will be confined to a special room for the night, which serves as a human-scale calorimeter. "We'll treat you as if you're a fire, measuring how much oxygen you take in and how much carbon dioxide you breathe out," says Peter Murgatroyd, who designed the calorimeter. In other words, they will be capturing everything that goes in and out of my body.

Hence my dilemma. My fear is that by morning, thanks to forces beyond my control, the room will be embarrassingly uninhabitable. Being British, I'm too shy to ask about this but, eventually, I will inevitably yield to the growing pressure in my tummy and hope no one notices in the morning.

I have earned tonight's sleep after this afternoon's flurry of activity, which extracted every last ounce of information about how efficiently I expend energy. Near-naked inside an egg-shaped capsule called the Bodpod, I learned the relative amounts of fat and lean tissue in my body. A dual-energy X-ray absorptiometer informed me that I have 6 per cent less fat than normal for my age, with my bone density spot on. Then I was whisked off to a treadmill to see how efficiently I use oxygen while exercising.

Finally, the calorimeter beckons, where Whittle explains the rationale behind the research before my lock-in for the night. His aim is to subtly turn up the body's central heating, taking lipid "fuel" from the bloodstream and from white fat cells that store it and send it for incineration in brown fat cells. Experiments in rodents have shown that the colder it is, the more energy they burn off in this way to produce heat. As babies, we also use this system to produce heat. But there is increasing evidence that many adults retain enough active brown fat, or adipose tissue, to do it too.

Whittle reckons this process is controlled by the brain, which orders the extra burning of fat in brown adipose tissue when it gets cold. Recent research has revealed that spicy food - such as cinnamon or capsaicin in chilli peppers - can activate nerve receptors in the skin, gut and mouth, triggering the same brain response as being cold does.

Whittle's colleague Maarten Soeters cites findings from Japan published this year showing that men with active brown adipose tissue burn more energy than normal when given capsules of capsinoid compounds, similar to capsaicin (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, DOI: 10.3945/ajcn.111.018606).

Now, Whittle is hoping to see if a mixture of ingredients like capsaicin can trick the brain into thinking it is cold, and coax brown adipose tissue into burning just a little more fat than normal, helping people to lose weight over years. He is keeping the exact ingredients secret for now.

"People get obese through a lifestyle that persists for years, yet we expect weight-loss treatments to work in months," says Whittle. "The cause has been slow-drip, and your body doesn't notice the rise in intake and a lack of exercise, so the trick to weight loss might be slow-drip in the other direction."

I'm proud to have been able to help, but in the morning I can't resist revisiting last night's dilemma. Laura Watson, the physiologist who took my measurements, guffaws at my enquiry. "Don't worry," she says, "we're used to it."

Shuttered Breast-Cancer Charity Files for Bankruptcy - Philanthropy ...

Y-Me, the national cancer organization that abruptly shut its doors and fired its staff earlier this month, has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy liquidation, according to the Chicago Tribune and The Wall Street Journal.

In its filing Tuesday, the Chicago-based charity, which operated the nation?s only 24-hour, multilingual hotline for breast-cancer patients, reported liabilities of $501,001 to $1-million against assets of $101,001 to $500,000. It has seen donations plummet in recent years.

Experts said Y-Me?founded in 1978, when there was little public discussion of breast cancer and few sources of emotional support for patients?has been crowded out as groups offering such aid proliferated and pink-ribbon campaigns made the disease a major national cause.

?There are just so many avenues now to receive information that weren?t around even 20 years ago,? Janine Gauthier, director of the Cancer Integrative Medicine Program at Chicago?s Rush University Medical Center, told the Tribune. ?You can literally find information anywhere.?

Five Things Your Plumber in Burnaby Might Not Have Mentioned to ...

When your pipes burst, your drains clog, and your faucets trickle, you may correct the issue yourself or call a plumber. Have you every what happens in your plumber's head as he calmly repairs your plumbing with furrowed brows and narrowed eyes? If you don't inquire directly, plumbers may not expose these five things about them and plumbing generally.

You get what you spend on. Be skeptical of companies that charge unbelievably high or low prices. If you have no idea regarding the "suitable" cost, obtain no less than 3 quotes and calculate for the mean. As a guideline, any person who bills more or less than a hundred dollars than the average value should tip your radar. Do your research well, and when it comes to research . . .

Stay away from the Phone Book. Everyone can put an ad there making claims they are the greatest plumber in town; but the truth is plumbing companies are businesses, and several of them will do anything to generate a quick sale. Call your local fixture shop, and ask them for referrals. Better yet, examine records with dependable people with first-hand experiences dealing with plumbing companies.

Several problems are seasonal. Shut off the hoses and faucets outside your home if you do not want them to transform into an cycle during the Burnaby winters. Or else, you may be shocked at what you must pay once spring happens. Likewise, if you're gonna be away from home for some time, turn off the main water valve; if you don't, you could find your house becoming a makeshift swimming pool.

Don't dismiss apparently minor plumbing issues. Allow a plumber Burnaby residents have faith in repair your tap if it leaks often, since those relatively little drops lost daily would mount up in your water expenses. Similar is true of loos that flush more water than required. Also, you'll minimize power bills if you have a malfunctioning heating system set right away. Inexplicable foul odor from your bathroom also deserves the attention of an effective plumber as it may be indicative of an issue with the sewers.

Have a good understanding of your plumbing system. Irrespective of how good your Burnaby plumber is, don't assume him to identify every single plumbing issue at first glance. If the plumber is done with his job, and you recall immediately that your supply valve requires inspection, say so. If you have any more nagging concerns with your plumbing system, bring them up while your plumber is still available.

Now that you fully understand these 5 things, you can take full advantage of the services of a plumber. For information on getting great Burnaby plumbers, check out wikihow.com/Find-a-Good-Plumber.

Obama hits out personally at Romney ads on ?you didn?t build that?

In a new campaign ad, President Barack Obama hits back personally at Republican charges that he thinks entrepreneurs don't deserve credit for building their own businesses. Obama's direct-to-the-camera appeal may be a sign that the latest onslaught from his opponents has rattled reelection strategists in Chicago.

"Those ads taking my words about small business out of context - they're flat out wrong," the president says in the 31-second pitch. "Of course Americans build their own businesses. Every day, hard-working people sacrifice to meet a payroll, create jobs and make our economy run."

"And what I said was that we need to stand behind them, as America always has, by investing in education and training, roads and bridges research and technology," he says. "I'm Barack Obama and I approve this message because I believe we're all in this together."

For days, Mitt Romney has led Republican attacks on Obama over his defense of the role government plays in fostering a climate in which entrepreneurs can thrive. At a July 13 campaign rally in Roanoke, Virginia, the president pointed to spending on education and infrastructure like roads and bridges as well as "this unbelievable American system" and declared "if you've got a business?you didn't build that." Romney and the Republican National Committee have used those words as ammunition to charge that Obama scorns personal enterprise in favor of a government-knows-best approach.

The Republican ads take Obama's words out of context. But the attacks seem potent at a time when each candidate is trying to paint his opponent as out of touch?or worse?on the issue that matters most to voters: the economy, which is still sputtering three and a half years after Obama took office vowing to fix it.

The new Obama ad will air in pivotal battlegrounds Virginia, North Carolina, Florida, Ohio, Iowa and Nevada, according to campaign aides.

Team Obama has been hitting back at the Republican accusations ? with surrogates, with campaign videos and statements, on Twitter, and even in the president's stump speech at a campaign event in Oakland, California, late Monday. So does that mean the Republican attacks are working?

"I'm glad you asked," campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters aboard Air Force One on Tuesday.?"We are not going to stand by while Mitt Romney slices and dices and deliberately takes out of context the President's remarks on businesses," she said.

OK, but are the attacks working?

"I think it's more that when you have a period of time where our opponent, Mitt Romney, and his surrogates have tweaked and taken apart to such a degree the President's remarks on an issue he's spoken about many, many times, and Mitt Romney has made similar points, it was important to us to ensure that people knew where the President was coming from, how much he supports entrepreneurs and small business owners, and how their records contrast," Psaki said.

So?is the president doing this himself because the attacks are, you know, working?

"Well, look, I think the president is a pretty effective communicator and an effective advocate for his policies," Psaki said. "Entrepreneurs and small business owners, the people who run those businesses on Main Streets across the country are the drivers of our economy. He absolutely believes in that."

"It's, in fact, been a part of his stump speech and his remarks for a very long period of time," she said.

But Romney's campaign isn't about to let this one go. In a statement about the ad, Romney spokesman Ryan Williams told reporters: "It's clear what President Obama believes because he told us: 'If you've got a business -- you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen.' He said it, and he meant it."

Obama to Republicans: stop playing politics with military

RENO, Nevada (Reuters) - President Barack Obama challenged Republicans on Monday to stop "playing politics" with the U.S. military in a fight over end-of-year budget cuts that would strike the defense industry if Congress does not agree on a new deficit-cutting deal.

Republicans and Obama's Democrats are at odds over how to avoid triggering billions of dollars in across-the-board federal budget cuts resulting from a "sequestration" mechanism put in place by Congress in 2011 as part of its solution to break an impasse over the U.S. government's borrowing limit.

In a speech to veterans that included a robust defense of his foreign policy achievements, Obama painted himself as being on the side of military men and women and said Republicans were putting them in jeopardy by insisting on extending Bush-era tax cuts that Democrats oppose.

"Let's stop playing politics with our military," Obama told a convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Nevada, a battleground state the president hopes to win in the November 6 election against Republican Mitt Romney.

"If the choice is between tax cuts that the wealthiest Americans don't need and funding our troops that they definitely need to keep our country strong, I will stand with our troops every single time."

Lawmakers must act before the end of the year to avoid the "fiscal cliff" of major tax hikes and spending cuts. Without a deal, many domestic and military programs face about $100 billion in across-the-board cuts next year.

"There's no reason that should happen because people in Congress ought to be able to come together and agree on a plan, a balanced approach that reduces the deficit and keeps our military strong," Obama said. "It should be done."

Obama wants to end tax cuts passed under President George W. Bush for very wealthy Americans to help reduce the U.S. deficit, although he favors extending tax cuts for middle-class families making less than $250,000 a year. Republicans argue that all tax cuts should be extended to avoid an adverse affect on the tepid economy.

Barring an early agreement, lawmakers will need to reach a consensus in the "lame-duck" session of Congress - the period between the November election and the start of the new congressional year in January.

The Treasury Department estimates that ending the tax cuts for the wealthy would gain about $50 billion in revenues in 2013 - nearly matching the size of the Pentagon spending cuts that are scheduled to be triggered on January 2.

Romney, who favors extension of the tax cuts, would like to delay the "fiscal cliff" debate until next year, when he hopes to be in office.

CAMPAIGN ISSUE, FOREIGN POLICY DEFENSE

The issue is likely to loom large on the campaign trail. Virginia, an important battleground state, has major military bases and defense operations in Newport News, Virginia Beach, and Richmond, which could be affected by the cuts.

If all new revenues from ending the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy were devoted to canceling the military spending cuts, there would still be the politically sensitive problem of cuts in domestic programs including education, nutrition assistance for the poor and medical research grants.

The Obama administration and Democrats in Congress have said repeatedly that spending cuts must be borne equally by military and domestic programs.

Teachers, scientists, labor unions and other organizations have joined together to warn that their programs are also in jeopardy from the fiscal cliff debate.

Obama used his speech to veterans to highlight his foreign policy record of ending the war in Iraq, setting a timeline for ending the war in Afghanistan, and presiding over the killing of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

Obama said his leadership had changed perceptions of the United States abroad.

Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, leaves on Wednesday for a weeklong trip to Britain, Israel and Poland, a trip meant to highlight his foreign policy credentials.

His campaign disputed Obama's claim of foreign policy success.

"In no region of the world is our country's influence any stronger than it was four years ago," Romney spokesman Ryan Williams said in a statement.

"President Obama has failed to restore our economy, is weakening our military with devastating defense cuts, and has diminished our moral authority."

The Republican chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, Buck McKeon, criticized the president for making "ultimatums from the campaign trail."

McKeon said Obama "has an obligation to the men and women under his command. He owes them the resources and certainty they need to complete the missions he has ordered them to do."

Also on Monday, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta met with representatives of the defense industry, agreeing with them that "sequestration will do tremendous harm to domestic and national security programs across the board," a Pentagon statement said.

In his speech, Obama also lamented the high suicide rate among U.S. veterans.

"According to some estimates, about 18 veterans are taking their lives each day - more every year than all the troops killed in Iraq and Afghanistan combined," Obama said. "That's a tragedy. It's heartbreaking. It should not be happening in the United States of America."
