Teens' struggles with peers forecast long-term adult relationships

Mar. 28, 2013 ? Teenagers' struggles to connect with their peers in the early adolescent years while not getting swept along by negative peer influences predict their capacity to form strong friendships and avoid serious problems even ten years later. Those are the conclusions of a new longitudinal study by researchers at the University of Virginia that appears in the journal Child Development.

"Overall, we found that teens face a high-wire act with their peers," explains Joseph P. Allen, Hugh P. Kelly Distinguished Professor at the University of Virginia, who led the study. "They need to establish strong, positive connections with them while at the same time establishing independence in resisting deviant peer influences. Those who don't manage this have significant problems as much as a decade later."

Researchers followed about 150 teens over a 10-year period (starting at age 13 and continuing to 23) to learn about the long-term effects of their peer struggles early in adolescence. They gathered information from multiple sources -- the teens themselves, their parents and peers, and by observing teens' later interactions with romantic partners. The teens comprised a racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse group.

Teens who had trouble connecting well with their peers in early adolescence had difficulty establishing close friendships in young adulthood. Teens who didn't connect well at 13 also had more difficulty managing disagreements in romantic relationships as adults.

Teens who had trouble establishing some autonomy and independence with peers (especially with respect to minor forms of deviance such as shoplifting and vandalism) were found to be at higher risk for problems with alcohol and substance use, and for illegal behavior, almost a decade later.

Conversely, teens who were seen as desirable companions -- those deemed empathetic, able to see things from different perspectives and control their impulses, and having a good sense of humor -- were more likely to have positive relationships in young adulthood.

Teens who were able to establish some autonomy vis a vis peers' influences were more likely to avoid problematic behavior in young adulthood, with teens who showed they were able to think for themselves in the face of negative peer influences using less alcohol as early adults and having fewer problems with alcohol and substance abuse as young adults. But teens who were seen as desirable companions were more likely to have higher levels of alcohol use in early adulthood and future problems associated with alcohol and substance use.

"The findings make it clear that establishing social competence in adolescence and early adulthood is not a straightforward process, but involves negotiating challenging and at times conflicting goals between peer acceptance and autonomy with regard to negative peer influences," Allen notes.

"Teaching teens how to stand up for themselves in ways that preserve and deepen relationships -- to become their own persons while still connecting to others -- is a core task of social development that parents, teachers, and others can all work to promote," adds Allen.

Teens who managed both of these goals simultaneously -- connecting with peers while retaining their autonomy -- were rated by their parents as being most competent overall by age 23. "There is a positive pathway through the peer jungle of early adolescence," says Allen, "but it is a tricky one for many teens to find and traverse."

Planning & Preparing For Your Big Island Family Vacation

Royal Kona Resort on Hawaii wants all its visitors to have a safe and happy time, which is why it is publishing several articles on its website for present and future visitors. The articles will offer a checklist and a number of sensible suggestions from Royal Kona management and staff about planning and enjoying a Hawaii family vacation.

The first article concerns the preparation stage, and contains a list of must-bring items that prospective tourists and vacationers will sorely miss if they forget to pack them. Vacationers are encouraged to bring plenty of beach clothes such as swimsuits, shorts and tank tops, as well as a hat to protect them from the intense tropical sun. Sunscreen is a must, lest one wakes up one sunny breezy morning with one's skin on fire and a very large down-draft to any further joy and mobility.

Counter-intuitively, it can also be useful to pack a warm coat, jacket and other well-insulated clothes - these will come in useful if you are interested in visiting Mauna Kea. The mountain tops out at almost 14,000 feet above sea level, and it can get rather chilly at even half that altitude.

Visitors are also urged to make copies of credit card information, as well as identification and other important documents. With the mainland thousands of miles away, the loss of a wallet can be a rather significant inconvenience; while local authorities are competent and friendly, having back-ups of as much paperwork as possible will ensure a much easier time for you if anything happens to your ID or payment methods.

The article also discusses when it's appropriate to rent a car for increased mobility on the Big Island. True to its name, it's a fairly sizable place, and if you'd like to go afield of Kailua-Kona and are interested in exploring some of the island's far-flung wonders, a rental vehicle will give you much more flexibility and cost far less than a taxi service. It may be a good idea to inquire about availability and make reservations in advance, rather than hoping to find a car on arrival - Hawaii is always a happening place, and you're not always guaranteed to find a vehicle.

There is a number of other suggestions in the article - on good places to find food, such as Royal Kona's famous Don the Beachcomber restaurant; places to get the signature Hawaiian drink Mai Tai, transportation to the nearest shopping district and many more.

The staff of Royal Kona is happy to help everyone plan a great Hawaii family vacation that will go off without a hitch and leave every visitor with a smile and a bevy of glowing memories.

The Duggars, Large Families, and Adoption ? My Life in God's Garden

I watched the Duggar?s visit to China tonight along with most of the Chinese adoption community.

I have also read many of the negative comments virally exploding on Facebook about such a large family considering growing their family even more by adoption.

I even read one very critical comment suggesting the Duggars should have thought about adopting fifteen children ago.

Really?

As a mom of quite a few biological children and two adopted teens from China, I have much to say on this topic.

There is a basic truth that we have somehow lost sight of in this country that was once so rooted and grounded on the principles of God.

God is all about life and creating, about growing and expanding.

He gives life.

He is not limited by our finite, tiny minds and narrow scopes of how many children we think we can handle.

As a mother of many who never did anything to avoid having children, I strongly disagree with the mindset that we must limit the number of biological children we have in order to care for orphans. God is bigger than all of that. He can bless families with huge numbers of biological children AND BRING THE ORPHANS HOME.

We do not need to limit God or to prevent life in one fashion to welcome it in another.

God has all the power in the world to bring the children home and bless us abundantly, if He so chooses, with many biological children.

Furthermore, it?s not the huge families who have learned to trust God for their family size that are perpetuating the orphan crisis. It is the mindset of the small family, the mindset that says no to God, the mindset that doesn?t have room for more in their lives that keeps the orphans from coming home.

And it is not God who is so busy creating new life that allows the orphans to suffer and remain alone.

It is His body, the church that has taken their eyes off the suffering Savior, and instead come to value comfort and ease and amusement, that fails to bring the orphans home.

Of course large families are adopting the children.

Large families have had to learn to go against society and even the church to grow their family beyond their own comprehension.

20130327-003756.jpg

Merely having a big family grows one?s faith immensely.

Large families have come to understand that resources don?t divide and diminish with each child. They grow and multiply.

Those who give to the poor will lack nothing, but those who close their eyes to them receive many curses. Proverbs 28:27

Large families know that God provides.

20130327-003419.jpg

Large families know that God grows their resources just as He grew the loaves and the fishes.

Large families have learned to step out of the rat race and busyness of life and to spend time at home working with and tending to their children.

Large families have already learned by necessity to structure and manage more in their lives.

Large families typically homeschool their children which can be the perfect environment for an older child who has grown up in an orphanage and is not developmentally ready for traditional schooling.

Large families view children as God sees children, as blessings from His very own hand.

20130327-003258.jpg

Parents of large families have already laid their desires and dreams at the feet of Jesus and know that their fulfillment will come in serving their Savior and welcoming His gifts into their lives.

Parents of large families know that there is no greater joy than following God?s will.

Parents of large families know they can parent another. They have done it over and over again.

20130327-003130.jpg

Parents of large families have parented many children with various personalities. They have years of life experience and wisdom.

Not only are the parents of large families overwhelmingly prepared and willing to welcome another, but the children are as well.

20130327-002921.jpg

Children from large families are blessed to understand that they are a part of something bigger than themselves. They learn to give and to share.

Children from large families know the world does not revolve around them.

20130327-002854.jpg

Children of large families value the friendships they have with their siblings.

Children from large families are happy, fulfilled and deeply loved.

A large family provides a fertile, welcoming, stimulating, loving community for an adopted child to immediately become a part of.

Large families welcome more children with an adeptness and skill that no brand new parent could rival.

Sometimes it is an established family that is prepared to care for the children with bigger challenges and needs.

Of course large families are adopting the children.

Of course large biological families are extremely well prepared to care for orphaned children.

May God use the Duggars to bless many orphans through their voice and may He use us to do the same.

And may God grow the faith of His people and bring the children home!

Blessings!

Ohio lawmakers take up wind, solar energy rule

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Battle lines are being drawn over whether Ohio should scrap its renewable energy standard, which requires power companies to generate a portion of their electricity from renewable sources such as solar and wind.

In hearings last week, Ohio Senate Public Utilities Chairman Bill Seitz, a Cincinnati Republican, reopened discussions on the 2008 state law, which said utilities must produce 12.5 percent of their electricity from renewables by 2025. The law also set energy efficiency targets to be met by the companies.

A surge in shale gas drilling that's promising new domestic supplies of a traditional energy source has added a new twist to the debate.

Opponents of the mandates say they fatten electric bills in a state whose rates are already higher than some neighbors. Some also question global warming and those who use it to push for reduced use of coal-fired power plants.

Supporters of the thresholds, in place in 29 states and the District of Columbia, say the mandates help the environment by beginning to replace use of coal-fired technology while spurring economic investments and new high-paying jobs in science and technology.

The American Legislative Exchange Council, a policy advisory group dominated by Republicans and targeted by liberals, is a leading force behind the push against the renewable energy targets. Ohio is among states to which the council has provided model legislation eliminating the targets for renewables, dubbed the Electricity Freedom Act.

Seitz is active in the council and Public Utilities Commission of Ohio Chairman Todd Snitchler, the state's top utility regulator, is a past member who became a guest speaker for the group after taking his regulatory appointment from Republican Ohio Gov. John Kasich.

As evidence of the council's influence in the debate, among early witnesses called on the subject this week was James Taylor, a senior fellow with the Heartland Institute, a leading voice in promoting skepticism about climate change. The institute hosts regular conferences on the topic drawing hundreds of participants to hear dozens of speakers, according to its website.

Among the sessions at its last conference was a panel of former NASA astronauts, scientists and administrators who "described how NASA is damaging its reputation for sound science by issuing false and exaggerated predictions of future climate change."

Taylor testified during the Ohio hearing, as he has in other states, that air pollution is in a decline that will continue even without requiring power companies to use expensive wind and solar technology.

Environment Ohio, which pushed for the 2008 law passed under then-Gov. Ted Strickland, a Democrat, issued a report following Seitz's hearing labeling the law a success story.

The review showed that between January 2009 and December 2011, Ohio's four largest utilities implemented energy efficiency programs that saved 3.2 million megawatt-hours of electricity ? enough to power 267,000 homes for a year.

It noted that 412 megawatts of wind capacity and 45 megawatts of solar photovoltaic capacity were added in Ohio between 2009 and 2012. That's enough to power 95,000 Ohio homes.

Policy Advocate Julian Boggs said in releasing the report that "we've only scratched the surface of Ohio's untapped potential for clean energy."

"It's the 21st century, and our energy doesn't need to pollute our air and water," he said.

Kerry in Iraq to press on Iran flights to Syria

BAGHDAD (AP) ? U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Sunday urged Iraq's leaders on an unannounced visit to Baghdad to halt Iranian overflights of weapons and fighters heading to Syria and to overcome sectarian differences that still threaten Iraqi stability 10 years after the American-led invasion that toppled dictator Saddam Hussein.

In meetings with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and other senior officials Kerry was telling them to stop Iranian aircraft from using Iraqi airspace to fly military personnel and equipment to support the Syrian government as it battles rebels. Iran and Iraq both say the flights are laden with humanitarian supplies, but the U.S. and others believe they are filled with weapons and fighters to help the Assad regime.

In the absence of a complete ban on flights, the U.S. would at least like the planes to land and be inspected in Iraq to ensure that they are carrying humanitarian supplies. Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton secured a pledge from Iraq to inspect the flights last year, but since then only two aircraft have been checked by Iraqi authorities, according to U.S. officials.

The overflights have long been a source of contention between the U.S. and Iraq and Kerry will tell the Iraqis that allowing them to continue will make the situation in Syria worse and ultimately threaten Iraq's stability.

One senior U.S. official said the sheer number of overflights, which occur "close to daily," along with shipments trucked to Syria from Iran through Iraq, was inconsistent with claims they are only carrying humanitarian supplies. The official said it was in Iraq's interest to prevent the situation in Syria from deteriorating further, particularly as there are fears that al-Qaida-linked extremists may gain a foothold in the country as the Assad regime falters.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because she was not authorized to publicly preview Kerry's meetings, said there are clear links between al-Qaida linked extremists operating in Syria and militants who are also carrying out terrorist attacks in Iraqi territory with increasing regularity.

A group of fighters in Syria known as Jabhat al-Nusra, a powerful offshoot of al-Qaida in Iraq that the U.S. has designated a terrorist organization, has claimed responsibility for most of the deadliest suicide bombings against regime and military facilities and, as a result, has gained popularity among some rebels.

Kerry will tell al-Maliki, a Shiite with close ties to Iran, that Iraq cannot be part of the political discussion about Syria's future until it clamps down on the Iranian shipments, the senior official said.

As Iraq approaches provincial elections next month, Kerry will also stress the importance of ensuring that all elements of society feel enfranchised, the official said. A recent decision to delay the polls in Anbar and Nineveh provinces is a "serious setback" to Iraq's democratic institutions and should be revisited, the official said.

In addition to al-Maliki, Kerry saw Iraqi parliament speaker parliament speaker Osama al-Nujaifi, a Sunni, whose faction is at odds with Maliki's Shiia. Kerry also plans to speak by phone with Massoud Barzani, the head of the Kurdish Regional Government based in Irbil to encourage the Kurds not go ahead with unilateral actions - especially involving oil, like a pipeline deal with Turkey.

He will stress the "importance of maintaining the unity of Iraq," say that "separate efforts undercut the unity of the country" and that "the Kurdish republic cannot survive financially without the support of Baghdad," the official said.

Kerry's arrival came just three days after the anniversary of the U.S.-led war that began on March 20, 2003, with an airstrike on Dora Farms in southern Baghdad in a failed attempt to kill Hussein.

The invasion and toppling of Hussein sparked years of bloodshed as Sunni and Shiite militants battled U.S. forces and each other, leaving nearly 4,500 U.S. soldiers and more than 100,000 Iraqis dead.

Violence has ebbed sharply since the peak of Sunni-Shiite fighting that pushed the country to the brink of civil war in 2006 and 2007. But insurgents are still able to stage high-profile attacks, and sectarian and ethnic rivalries remain threats to the country's long-term stability.

Earlier this week, an al-Qaida in Iraq front group claimed responsibility nearly 20 attacks that killed 65 people across the country on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Islamic State of Iraq said it unleashed the car bombs and other explosions to avenge the executions and "massacres" of convicted Sunni inmates held in Iraqi prisons. Its claim came on the 10th anniversary of the start of the war, although it made no reference to the significance of the date.

Kerry arrived in Baghdad from Amman, where he had been accompanying President Barack Obama on his tour of Israel, the Palestinian Authority and Jordan. His visit to Iraq is the first by a U.S. secretary of state since Clinton went in April 2009. During Obama's first term, the Iraq portfolio was largely delegated to Vice President Joe Biden.

Since Clinton's trip, the American diplomatic presence in Iraq has shrunk dramatically, most significantly since U.S. ended military operations in late 2011, according to officials. A year ago, there were 16,000 State Department employees and contractors in the country. As of Kerry's visit, that number had declined to 10,500 and it will drop to 5,100 by the end of 2013, officials said.

Train Your Brain By Completely Deleting Mistyped Words

Train Your Brain By Completely Deleting Mistyped Words When most of us mistype words, we only hit backspace up until the point where we made the mistake, or we correct it later with spellcheck. Instead, try immediately deleting the entire word to learn from the error.

This trick forces us to go back and type the whole word correctly, rather than simply fixing a small error. Since typing relies so heavily on muscle memory, this technique can help us type the word correctly the next time. And, if you use a keyboard shortcut (CTRL+Backspace on Windows, or Option+Delete on OS X) to delete the entire word at once, this might even end up being faster than finding and fixing just a letter or two.

Whenever you mistype a word, don't just remove it to the point where you made the mistake, remove the whole word, you will train you brain to type it perfectly next time. | Reddit via Lifehack.org

Jeb Bush: I'm 'in Sync' With Lindsey Graham on Immigration Reform

During an interview for "This Week," former Florida governor Jeb Bush told me that he was "in sync" with South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham on the issue of immigration reform.

Graham, a key member of the bipartisan group of senators pushing for immigration reform, took Bush to task after the former Florida governor said Monday that he did not support a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants, which is a key component of the plan being pushed by the Senate group. Bush subsequently reversed course and said he could in fact support a plan that included a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants already living in the United States.

"Senator Graham and I talked. He was responding to concerns that were expressed before the book was actually published," Bush said. "I told him that I support his efforts and I applaud what he's doing. And he concluded, after he heard what the thesis of the book is that we're in sync. We're on the same - on the same path."

"The basic premise needs to be that coming to the country legally should be easier with less cost than coming to the country illegally. And if you can create a system like that as is being discussed in the Senate and in the House- through a path to citizenship, that's fine," Bush said. "But my guess is that will take a long, long time to achieve. In the interim, it's important to take people out from the shadows to allow them to have- the dignity of being- having legal status."

Florida governor Jeb Bush told me that he was "very encouraged" about the possibility of comprehensive immigration reform - a legislative achievement that has eluded lawmakers for more than a decade - becoming law by the end of the year.

"I'm very encouraged. There are some big sticking points about how do you deal with making sure that there's enough seasonal workers, temporary worker programs that have been quite successful in the past," Bush said. "There's a lot of work being done, really good work, courageous work, 'cause this is complex and may not be popular, but I think it's- it is possible that comprehensive reform can be done."

Turning to President Obama's new effort to reach out to his colleagues on right - which included inviting the GOP's 2012 vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan to lunch - Bush complimented the president, comparing his actions to those of Ronald Reagan, an icon of the Republican Party.

"I'm very encouraged by the fact the president is trying to restore some personal connection with policymakers in Congress. I'm at the Reagan Library today and that's kind of what Ronald Reagan did. He didn't scorn his adversaries, he embraced them and got a lot done," Bush said. "This is very positive in my mind. It makes it harder to reach agreement when there's not trust. It's just human nature. And so this is maybe a good, positive first step."

Bush qualified his praise for the president, tweaking him for a lack of "seriousness" when it came to the president's efforts to reach a deal to reduce the national debt and specifically his willingness to embrace entitlement reform as part of a potential bargain with Republicans.

"I haven't seen the seriousness of the president's efforts. I'd love to see a specific plan that really did reform- bend the cost curve for Medicare and the entitlement system. I haven't seen it, so if there is through these talks, some kind of consensus that emerged, I don't think you should say, 'no, no, no' about anything'" Bush said.

"Frankly, there was already been one of the largest tax increases in American history a month ago. And frankly, we ought to be focused on sustained economic growth, which grows more revenue for people and for government than any tax increase that's been suggested, so there are a lot of things that could be done to create a real grand bargain. And let the process work. I'm hopeful that the president's sincere about this," Bush said.

Bush also insisted during out conversation that he is not positioning himself for a 2016 presidential run as he promotes his new book "Immigration Wars," even as speculation grows that he aims to be the third member of the Bush family to occupy the oval office.

"I'm not viewing this as a political reentry either. I just don't view it that way," Bush said. "Everything's viewed with a political lens in Washington and that's just the nature of the beast and it is what it is."

Finally Bush gave me an update on the health of his father, 88-year-old former president George H.W. Bush, who was released from the hospital earlier this year after a lengthy stay.

"He's doing better. You know, he's got his spectacular chief caregiver, Barbara Bush, taking care of him and he's regaining his strength day by day. And he's out more," Bush said. "He was at the University of Texas, A&M, at the Bush School- twice in the last two weeks, so- we're excited that he seems to be making great progress."

(AP) ? A St. Louis-area animal shelter has found a home for a 37-pound cat named Biscuit. It even found him a sympathetic shoulder to meow on.

Operators of the St. Charles County shelter say recent news coverage of the tubby tabby's plight led to more than 100 adoption requests for him.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/10gClxR ) reports that Biscuit will go to live with Ed and Lisa Pyatt next week. The Eureka couple adopted another fat cat, Max, several years ago, and Ed Pyatt says it'll be good for Max to have a buddy.

Biscuit is roughly three times the weight of a normal adult cat and will have to stay on a strict diet. His previous caretakers had to give him up because they could no longer care for him.

CSN: Theo: Cubs see Sveum as right man for job

MESA, Ariz. ? How do you know? That was the question hanging over the Cubs and White Sox and two rookie managers last spring.

Would the guy who won the interview win over the clubhouse, the media and the fans while keeping the peace with the front office?

Each search had its own logic, with Cubs president Theo Epstein deciding to hire Terry Francona 2.0 instead of the manager who helped him win two World Series rings with the Boston Red Sox. The White Sox went with an outside-the-box choice, a big name without any of Ozzie Guillen?s explosiveness (or experience).

Dale Sveum and Robin Ventura ? who were once briefly teammates on the South Side ? now appear to be two very good educated guesses. Year 2 continued on Thursday at HoHoKam Stadium, with the White Sox beating the Cubs 8-3.

Sveum didn?t flip out during a 101-loss season. He gave a no-big-deal shrug when it came out that Hall of Fame buddy Robin Yount shot his ear while quail hunting in Arizona over the winter. So why would he get fired up about another Cactus League exhibition?? ?

Ventura has a similar sense of calm, and that?s why both Chicago teams feel like they have the right guys for jobs that are at once everything and nothing alike.

But you can?t know for certain until you?re around it every day. That?s why new assistant hitting coach Rob Deer recently called up Yount to talk about their old teammate with the Milwaukee Brewers.

Here?s how Deer recalled it: ?I told Robin: I?ve known Dale for 25 years and I?ve known him as being a friend. I?ve known him as being a teammate and I?ve never seen the managerial side of him. It?s so impressive.

?I have to tell you that I?m impressed with him each and every day about how he goes about it, how his players respect him, how he respects his players. Each day I learn new things.?

In November 2011, Epstein knew Sveum would be a strong candidate, but hadn?t really stayed in touch after his third-base coach moved to Milwaukee after the 2005 season. ?

Sveum loved talking hitting and breaking down mechanics. He was fluent in the BATS video system, statistical analysis and spray charts. But it wasn?t a lock that he could run the entire show. People around the Brewers wondered why he was passed over twice, even after steering the team to a wild card as interim manager in 2008.

?Dale had a very thorough, very legitimate interview process,? Epstein said, ?because we needed to project him from being a great coach into the manager?s role. So there were a lot of questions.?

Sveum grew close to several players on the 2004 Red Sox team that won the World Series and will be remembered forever throughout New England as the Band of Idiots.

Sveum was tight with Kevin Millar and Jason Varitek and still golfs with Mark Bellhorn regularly over the winter in Arizona. Cubs executives remembered how the coach wasn?t afraid to talk to the superstars in Boston. ?

?Dale?s good with everybody. He?s just got that demeanor. Everybody likes him,? Francona said. ?He?s comfortable in the clubhouse. You?re not going to find a place where he?s more comfortable.?

[RELATED: Francona believes Epstein hired 'the right guy' in Sveum]

No doubt, it was odd seeing Sveum at the winter meetings in jeans or a suit. You?re used to seeing him walking through the clubhouse in blue shorts and an Under Armour T-shirt, or in a Cubs windbreaker and uniform pants heading to the field with a bat in his hand. He doesn?t lock himself in his office.

?We knew the plan (and) we weren?t going to take any shortcuts or vary from it,? Sveum said. ?Within a year, the whole organization?s changed so dramatically, for the good, obviously. But you just get better players (and) you create an atmosphere where people want to play here and they want to come to this ballpark and work.

?That?s all you can do. That?s the transformation we?re trying to do here all the time.?

[RELATED: Cubs will find out what their rotation is made of]

Instead of making fun of Sveum behind his back ? or during off-the-record sessions with reporters ? the players let Sveum in on the joke in the middle of their first full-squad meeting this spring, peeling off jackets to reveal their bright orange hunting gear.

?He?s a really easy-going guy. He knows ? he played for a long time,? new catcher Dioner Navarro said. ?He?s honest. He?s going to tell you like it is. I think that?s the best way to approach it?no bullcrap.?

In the same way Ventura escaped heat for a late September fade and instead got credit for guiding a surprising team to 85 victories, Sveum won the game of expectations.

?Those who were paying attention last year were able to see what kind of manager he was ? very consistent behind the scenes, handled the clubhouse great,? Epstein said. ?There were strategic decisions to be made and I think he showed a little bit of the factors he?ll rely on to make decisions. That?s more important than necessarily what he chooses to do in a given instance.

?This year, the roster is a little bit more dynamic in terms of having platoon options, it will be a deeper bullpen for him to work with (and) we hope he has a better hand to play in certain scenarios.?

[MORE: Questions remain for Cubs at third base]

The Cubs kept that in mind when they structured a three-year contract with a club option for 2015.

?We flat-out told Dale in the interview about our plans for the organization, how we were going to build it up the right way and not look for quick fixes,? Epstein said. ?And as a result we were not going to evaluate him heavily on wins and losses in the first year.

?But we would evaluate him. There would be a lot of factors that went into our consideration of how good a job he was doing ? and he excelled in all those areas.

?I don?t think any manager in baseball was going to win the pennant with the team we put on the field last year. But I hope Dale?s the one who wins it for the team we put on the field going forward.? ?

Sveum isn?t a sound-bite machine. He?s not one for introspection in front of the cameras. He doesn?t have Lou Piniella?s flair for the dramatic. Sooner or later, he?s going to be judged on wins and losses, and that won?t bother him. It has to get old talking up the plan and the process and the culture and the future.

?I don?t want to talk about last year,? Sveum said. ?The fact of the matter is once the season?s over, I ain?t going to think about it. I?m not that kind of person to worry about what happened in the past. It?s just a waste of time.?

George Lucas Says Fisher, Hamill and Ford are Returning for Star Wars: Episode VIISubmit Comment
Carrie Fisher recently confirmed that she'll return for "Star Wars: Episode VII." Her representatives immediately released a statement saying that the actress was joking. But in a new interview, George Lucas accidentally revealed that Fisher, Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford are all coming back for the new film.

"We had already signed Mark and Carrie and Harrison or we were pretty much in final stages of negotiation," said Lucas. "Maybe I'm not supposed to say that. I think they want to announce that, but we were negotiating with them."

According to a recent rumor, the story will focus on the children of Han Solo, Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker. The children will be about twenty years old. Meanwhile, R2D2 and C-3PO will be unchanged.

Luke's been putting in his sister? Or in Han?

Superman Returns focused on the child and that movie was ruined

So Duke Skywalker, Dan Solo, and Leia something.

I hope their screen time will be limited.

This really does have the possibility of being worse than every Jar Jar scene.

Stapes writes:

I just hope Fisher and Ford remember their dentures, and Hamill gets on a diet.

minkowski writes:

@Crazy: Wouldn't say SR focused on the kid, but he sure was a ridiculous MacGuffin. Only the Crystal Skull is worse. Should have focused on Superman being the bad ass only Superman can be, but instead we got him looking stupid whilst aping Reeve. And the entire Lex Luthor Atlantean-Kryptonite plot device didn't help.

As for the news, everyone saying this will suck should think again. Disney has the CGI wherewithal to knock this out of the part, so visuals, check. JJ Abrams is on board to direct and he's not exactly a McG/Ratner slouch. Direction? Check. Michael Arndt is writing the script, and he did fine with Toy Story 3 and Little Miss Sunshine, plus Oblivion looks pretty f*cking solid. So screenplay? Check. You have the old crew coming back, so old school appeal? Check.

All that's left to put to rest any serious concerns is who they'll cast for the younger crew, the cast who will carry the water for the next trilogy. Big part, sure, but it's a good bet they'll cast them a little better that Lucas did with the second three films, and that's all anyone should need.

minkowski writes:

park.

Deaft0ne writes:
on March 7th, 2013 at 10:21:59 PM

Yeah casting Hayden Christensen as Mannequin Skywalker railroaded AOTC and ROTS because he is such a bad actor and ROTS was barely saved by the ramping up of Darth Sidious and everything else to tie into ANH.

When I first heard about the prequel trilogy I said for the longest time that Ethan Hawke, Guy Pearce, or Jason Patric should play Anakin and this was because of all of them having a resemblance to Mark Hamill in ANH and that they are all good actors.

Hayden looks nothing like Hamill.
